The establishment and development of the Library is closely connected with founding the Teacher Training College, the graduate school which was later transformed into the Higher Teacher Education School. Since 1 October 2004, it has been the Main Library of Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa.
The Main Library functions as the main research library and provides the library & information services of JDU. Its main objectives are:
- to collect and replenish the Library’s holdings
- to organize information sources that can be easily available through public catalogues
- to store and preserve the Library’s collections and materials
- to provide easy access to Library’s resources and services
At present, the computerised Library’s catalogue contains about 300,000 volumes and all the publications are accessible through the local lending library and the academic reading rooms (the Main Reading Room, the Journals Reading Room and the Reading Room of Political Science).
The Library collects materials related to the following fields of science represented by Jan Długosz University:
philology; general, special needs and inclusive education; pre-school and school education; social pedagogy, technology, history, law, economics, administration, organisation & management, philosophy, sociology, psychology, arts, music, religious studies, library science, mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry, biology, ecology, environmental protection, physical education.
